Year 10 Camp

Year 10 camp: This camp program is aimed more towards a longer period of investigation by the students.

  • Identifying and producing a program to reduce the waste and pollution in the camp ground area.
  • Abundance of species in the area, and the effect of the abundance on the biome.
  • Metal extraction and mineralogy of the surrounding geology. This depends on the camp ground area,  but usually some iron or copper is available for extraction.
  • pH and minerals of camp earth, and how it varies from area outside camp ground.
  • Measuring the effects of climate change on camp area.
  • Resource management in local area.
  • Making a monocular - lenses.
  • How can we make and cook the best campground pizza?
  • Pedal power, can we charge a car battery?
  • Sustainability task relevant to camp area.

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 camp: This camp program includes your choice of at least 3 of these activities, all are directly linked to the year 9 science curriculum and relate to camping and the outdoors:

  • The chemistry of flares. How to make a flare and how to change the light colour.
  • Alkali metals, reactivity.
  • Overnight task: How much water can be collected from the air - competition.
  • Making a monocular - lenses.
  • Making an emergency radio from a torch.
  • Making a compass.
  • Design and Build a solar cooker.
  • Micro-bug survey.
  • Measuring the effects of climate change on camp area.
  • Sustainability task relevant to camp area.
  • Waste and Plastic Pollution.

Year 8 Camp

Year 8 camp:  This camp program includes your choice of at least 3 of these activities, all are directly linked to the year 8 science curriculum and relate to camping and the great outdoors:

  • Producing a gas and then using it. This also includes liquid nitrogen.
  • Building a parachute: How long will it take to descend from 100 m - competition.
  • Overnight task: How much water can be collected from the air - competition.
  • Challenge: Can we lift a car (using mechanical advantage).
  • What is starlight? Chemical make up of starlight, involves production of different coloured flames.
  • Water filtration, cleaning dirty water, mixtures and compounds.
  • Design and Build a solar cooker.
  • Using a quadrat to measure the number of invasive species
  • Sustainability task relevant to camp area.
  • Waste and Plastic Pollution.

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 camp:  This camp program includes your choice of at least 3 of these activities, all are directly linked to the year 7 science curriculum and relate to camping and the great outdoors:

  • Light up the camp: Students will build a circuit using a 12 V battery and globes and switches to light up the camp any way they desire.
  • Power lights by wind, if there is sufficient wind this is an additional activity to construct wind turbines.
  • States of matter – includes bangs from liquid nitrogen and steam.
  • Reversible and Irreversible changes: Demonstrations of these changes involving some explosions and very active chemical reactions. Students will make damper culminating in students making ice cream using liquid nitrogen (this is very tasty ice-cream).
  • Overnight task: How much water can be collected from the air - competition. 6: Inter-tent communication. Sound waves through string.
  • Design and Build a solar cooker.
  • Classification of plants and animals around the camp ground.
  • Basic plant anatomy.

Primary School Camps

Year 5 or 6 Show:  This camp show includes the following activities directly linked to the year 6 science curriculum, and involve a number of quick chemical reactions to really engage your students:

  • Making an arc light from a pencil.
  • Elephants toothpaste on a large scale.
  • States of matter – includes bangs from liquid nitrogen and steam.
  • Hydrogen generator, and then a gas test.
  • Marshmallow Cannon
  • Extracting DNA from strawberries.
